What's Next ???

It's that time of year again when Satchel & friend & fellow artist, Shawn Maschino will be showing their new work in the restaurant for December & January.

Here are their statements--
Shawn Maschino is an artist that has lived in Gainesville for nearly 20 years.  His current body of work is part of an ongoing collaboration with his father, a seascape artist, that passed away two years ago.  Faced with several hundred, "unfinished", paintings Shawn took it upon himself to complete the works.  For the last few years he has incorporated portraits into his fathers paintings of the ocean, land and sky in a way that highlights both of their strengths.  Bold aerosol stencil work is combined with organic acrylic work to create an interesting juxtaposition of styles.  Shawn and his father had not spoken to one another for almost 20 years.  A month before he died his father contacted Shawn to "unload" his art supplies and unfinished canvases.  He was able to see the first series.  With this body of work Shawn hopes to remind himself and others to talk to their loved ones, one way or another.  Shawn currently works downtown doing maintenance, design and construction for the owners of The TOP, The Wooly, The Pop-a-Top, The Dime, The Atlantic, and The Arcade bar.   http://shawnmaschino.tumblr.com/

I'm Satchel Raye and I've been painting 30 years. In the past few years I've been working more collage elements into my paintings. I have settled on a tradition of painting symmetrical works one year and asymmetrical the next. Pulling from an outsider/ folk art inspiration, I paint with acrylic house paint on wood and make my own frames. Painting is where I go to seek and find solitude and inner peace.
