What's Next ?

We have a tradition here at Satchel's that the artists who show their work during December & January are long-time, good friends Satchel Raye & Lennie Kesl. Sadly, Lennie passed away last week. But his work --as well as Satchel's-- will still be shown beginning Tuesday December 4. Please stop by.

WHAT'S UP ?

The artists currently showing in the restaurant are Shawn Maschino & Alexis Dodd. Below are some images of their work. I have never claimed to be much of a photographer & i certainly prove it here. I even enlisted a couple of folks at work to give it a go & they didn't do any better ( the glare). So hopefully this will give you enough of a sense of this interesting work that you will be forced to come in & have a pizza & see what it REALLY looks like. The first two images are Shawn's---the second two are Alexis'.

WHAT'S NEXT ?????

New art will be up in the restaurant beginning tuesday november 6. The artists are Alexis Dodd & Shawn Maschino. Here is their statement: Alexis Dodd & Shawn Maschino , of Circle Square studios, and creators of the " VIP Booth" table in Lightnin Salvage, display new work through November. This show features a process we have been developing over the last year, using scrap wood from larger production jobs to create art work. Creating designs and patterns with the wood , that we then encase in epoxy. The epoxy is stained or dyed with spices ( i.e. smoked paprika, cumin, curry, and old bay ) in order to create a more organic color palette. You may be familiar with the bar top that they created for the Top restaurant as well as Big Lou's with this process. Long term artists and contributors to the community, Alexis and Shawn have recently been trying to fortify Circle Square ( 108 S.W. 6th St.) as an artistic and functional object production facility to serve the community.

WHAT'S NEXT ?

New art goes up next week in the restaurant.

The artists are Jason Armadillo & Ralph Sabio.

Here's how they describe what they do---

Jason Armadillo--

Jason Armadillo has been a resident of Gainesville on & off for over 20 years & studied illustration & film/t.v. production at the Savannah School of Art & Design. He has created numerous pieces of art which have manifested themselves locally, nationally, & internationally. He describes himself as a "cartoony illustrator "& mainly works in the realm of monsters & animals. His prior exhibit at Satchel's consisted mainly of works on vintage Melmac plates. This time around, the exhibit is specifically "monster" oriented for October/Halloween & is an attempt at visually combining the influences of H.P. Lovecraft, Asian art, & his own cartoony style. He hopes everyone likes it......

Ralph Sabio--

Ralph is an amateur photographer who started just two years ago while his wife was away in South Korea. He enjoys the challenge of capturing the beauty around us without using photoshop. Focusing on the wonderful world of the small, Ralph often finds himself using his macro lens to capture a world mostly unfamiliar to the average passer by.

What's Next ?????

The new art will go up on Sept. 3.
Sooooo---
you have until then to see what's up right now.

The Sept. artists are Ardee Roberson & The Rogue Lemon.
Here are their statements.

Adee Roberson is a visual artist & musician who lives in Florida & California. She believes in ART as a commemoration of the natural world & our ancestors. She creates through MAGIC, DREAMS, & INTUITION.
Some of these works are about the magic & mystery of the Trinity ( pyramids, triangles, third eyes, etc ) . Others are an ode to the cosmos, obscure historical figures, legendary black gay icons, & my friends.

The Rogue Lemon--

"Put away your toys ....It's time for dinner!"
As a kid I remember feeling absolutely devastated at the prospect of having to put away my toys to eat or go to bed. "How could they do this to me ?" I thought. " Battles were being fought ! New worlds were being discovered ! Important stuff like that shouldn't take a back seat to food or sleep!"
Of course my perspective on this has changed a bit over the years but I can still appreciate the complete immersion children experience during playtime.
As adults , we can easily forget the intense drama we felt during play. After all , it's just injection molded plastic. But to a child, these pieces of plastic embody what it is to be hunter, hunted, victor, vanquished, prisoner, hero, villain......confused, lost, afraid, or empowered.
My " Just A Game " series seeks to revisit the world of miniature toys. Through controlled depth of field and lighting I explore the rich drama and excitement of play.
Anything is possible ........and it is anything but just a game.

Now for some pictures---
see artists info in previous post--

Edie Snyder--

Val Ryals ---

Now for the art ---

Edie Snyder ( BFA -Painting , UF ) living & working in Gainesville, Florida

My work is autobiographical , each piece represents a time in my life or an event. All works are built from personal ephemera , debris & memories. These are attempts at visual non-linear story telling.

Val Ryals ( AKA TUNA COLADA) is a local artist/ musician based out of Ft McCoy , Fl, the heart of the music & art industry in North Central Florida. his age is not quite known but he's older than the moonshine flowing from them hills & maybe younger than Keith Richards. He was raised by wolves like all good artists till he reached the age of consent & consentually resigned himself to self-unemployment due to being a musician/artist. he usually paints with toothpick twigs & pointy objects & usually paints on cast off political signs, tile, plywood & sometimes sawblades.. Some say he paints in the dark but I can't confirm that. of two things he is sure though ...."art is not a contest , & people are attracted to bright shiny objects , so carry on, carry on ."

Photos of some of their work will be posted soon. Like tonite hopefully.

Come see the new art. Come eat pizza. Come listen to music & maybe try the draft beer ( 6 kinds ) at LSE.

We're happy to be back.

Thanks for all the wonderful support !

What's Next ?

You have only one more day---sat. feb. 4 to see the art of Satchel & Lennie Kesl in the restaurant.

The new art will be up beginning Tuesday february 7 through Saturday March 3.

Here is some info on the work going up.

Courtney Hammer:

I'm currently pursuing my M.A. in Museum Studies with a focus in Exhibition Design at UF. However , along with my interest in the way art is displayed, I also like to dabble in artistic endeavors myself ! I've always had an interest in the creative & that tendency manifests itself in my staunch resolve to make rather than buy things ( when possible of course ). As a result , & with the help of my lovely fiance, our home has become a product of our hard work & creative ability . The paintings this month are extensions of some hanging around the house. I wanted them to be whimsical, beautiful, & allow the viewer to get lost for a bit. Enjoy!

Liz Wilson:

Liz Wilson lived most of her life in the Northeast, moved to Gainesville in 2005, & passed away in May 2011. She was a writer & an artist. She was also a loving mother , a devoted grandmother , & a wonderful friend. She is greatly missed.
She left behind a body of work that is a testament to many of her greatest characteristics : a love for natural beauty , energetic color , & free-spiritedness. Like the subject of many of her paintings , she was in full bloom & was with us too short a time.
She loved coming to Satchel's with her family & we hope that in sharing her artwork here, others can have a little taste of her artistic spontaneity & love for life . Enjoy !
